Abdul Kalam (former President of India) Decision making skills can be very important in a careers context: Which career should I choose? Which university should I go to? Which course should I. Of course they are also valuable in many other contexts in life. The key steps in decision making are: 1. Clarify the nature of the problem before deciding action.
What is the purpose of the decision? What is the expected outcome? What are the key priorities: time, money, quality? Will a quick, cheap and cheerful solution do or do you need to invest time and cash to get things absolutely right? Collect and summarise the data systematically. Decisions can't be made in a vacuum! Gather, collate, classify and organise the information you need to make a decision. You need to analyse and evaluate all the important factors in making the decision. Analyse the various factors involved in the problem and identify the key ones. Highlight any critical factors upon which the success on the decision will hinge. Sound out the views and opinions of others: they may see something you have missed. Use creativity/initiative in the generation of alternative solutions to the problem. Produce a list of all the courses of action you can think of without trying to narrow these down. At this stage just produce a list of possible courses of action without trying to evaluate these. Brainstorming may help here (see below)Think outside the box: don't just look at the obvious and tried and tested options. Don't be afraid to challenge the status quo. See our pages on lateral thinking and on the creative careers search. How to brainstorm. The purpose of brainstorming is to produce as many possible options as possible without evaluating them. Get a blank sheet of paper and write down any idea or possible solution which may help. Don't censor your ideas. Write down everything, no matter how silly or insignificant to keep the flow going as once idea might lead to another. Only once all the ideas have dried up, cross out or adapt all the weaker ideas: this should still leave you with a number of possible solutions. Brainstorming can be done in a group, in which case no comments should be made about the decisions proposed or group members put down for proposing unusual ideas. Produce. a SHORT list of the best options. Remove any obviously poorer choices. Don't have too many options in your final list or it will be too confusing. Make your decision. For each of your shortlist of options consider its advantages and disadvantages. Try to recognise any inconsistencies in your reasoning and question any assumptions you have made. Evaluate each option against the key factors to consider the combined effect of all the factors. Weight each factor in terms of importance paying particular attention to any critical factors. See the decision matrix below to help you do this. Sometimes you may get so immersed that you may not be able to see the wood for the trees: if this happens sleep on it and postpone the decision until the next day. This may give you a fresh perspective. Using a DECISION MATRIX to help you to decide between alternatives. Make a short list of your key options and look at the positives and negatives for each item. You could include many more factors. Of course intuition (gut reaction) can also play a major part in making decisions, but a decision matrix may at least give you an idea of which is the most logical choice. Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach. Tom Robbins. In a moment of decision, the worst thing you can do is nothing. Theodore Roosevelt. A peacefulness follows any decision, even the wrong one. Rita Mae Brown. When you have to make a choice and don't make it, that is in itself a choice. William James. Some persons are very decisive when it comes to avoiding decisions. Brendan Francis. You've got a lot of choices. Steven Woodhull. Decision is a sharp knife that cuts clean and straight; indecision, a dull one that hacks and tears and leaves ragged edges behind it. Gordon Graham. Whether you decide you can or you can't, you're right! Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions. When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it! Implement your decision See our page on action planning. Try to have a backup (contingency) plan in case your first option doesn't work out. Learn to argue your solution if there is opposition from others. If it is a group decision, consider the implications for the other members of the team. Communicate your ideas to the other team members, explain your reasoning and make sure they understand the logic behind it and get their commitment to carry it out. See our page on effective group work. Evaluate how well things went. Learn from the experience especially if your solution does not prove successful! SWOT Analysis. A SWOT analysis is a subjective method used to evaluate the STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES, and THREATS involved in trying to attain an objective. It involves specifying the objective and identifying the internal and external factors that are favourable and unfavourable to achieving the objective. It can be used as a business tool or on a personal level where it can help you take advantage of your talents, abilities and opportunities. It can help to clarify and summarise the key issues and opportunities facing you and thereby to set objectives and develop new strategies. It should help you to to maximise strengths and minimise weaknesses in order to take advantage of opportunities and reduce threats. Threats. External conditions which could create problems. What obstacles do you face? How can you lessen these? Could any of your weaknesses create problems? If I stay unemployed for too long it could be difficult to get a job. Tough job market at present. Having said all the above, you also need to take into account your subconscious - your gut reaction will often make better decisions than any amount of analysis: We live in a world that assumes that the quality of a decision is directly related to the time and effort that went into making it.. We believe that we are always better off gathering as much information as possible an depending as much time as possible in deliberation. We really only trust conscious decision making. But there are moments, particularly in times of stress, when haste does not make waste, when our snap judgments and first impressions can offer a much better means of making sense of the world. The first task of Blink is to convince you of a simple fact: decisions made very quickly can be every bit as good as decisions made cautiously and deliberately. Malcolm Gladwell from his book . Unable to decide between these equally appealing choices, the donkey dies of hunger. This is called Buridan's Ass paradox, named so after a 1. Century French Philosopher but in fact can be originally found in Aristotle's . Although this is obviously apocryphal it does emphasise the point that the more choices you have, the harder it is to make a decision! See When Choice is Demotivating. The theory behind making decisions There are big differences between the decisions we make by intuition, and those we make by logical analysis. The logical part of your mind (the part you are aware of) can analyse problems and come up with rational answers. It's excellent at solving problems, but it is slow and needs a lot of energy. If you have to solve a demanding problem while walking, you will probably stop because your analytical mind can't focus on both tasks simultaneously. Your intuitive mind on the other hand is fast and automatic. It's very powerful, but hidden and is responsible for most of the things that you do, think and believe but you have no idea this is happening. Mistakes occur when we allow our intuitive system to make decisions that we should allow our logical mind to deal with. These mistakes are called cognitive biases. They make us spend impulsively, be influenced too much by what others think and affect our beliefs, opinions, and decisions. Here are some common cognitive biases. Present bias causes us to pay attention to what is happening now, but not to worry about the future. Read and van Leeuwen found that when making choices of food for the following week, 7. Test.com is a software solution for you to easily create. Create Your Own Online. If you’re new to online testing or if your test volumes are. Basic FTP Commands What is. Gina wrote about how to set up a personal home web server, but in my experience the killer home server feature that hasn't been covered to date is how to set up a personal FTP server at home. A home FTP server is useful to anyone who wants to save and retrieve files on their computer from anywhere. Ever forget a Word document on your home desktop that you really need at work? Ever download a PDF that explains how to fix something at work and you realize too late you left it at home that morning?
If you have a personal FTP server, and you can reach your computer from any place on earth, your files will never be captive on your hard drive at home again. Sometimes it's when I'm on a business trip and need an extra file left at home, most often it's when I'm in the office and didn't remember to bring files I worked on at home. By far my best FTP story is from a few years ago, when my wife was giving a reading at a wedding. A couple hours before the ceremony, we realized we left the poem sitting in the tray of my printer at home. We sped to my nearby office, I FTP'd to my desktop, got the Word doc downloaded and printed it there, which we took to the wedding with time to spare. My home FTP server saved the day. The main advantage of a home FTP server over a web server is that you can save files to the server, whereas with a web server, you can only get files. The disadvantage of a home FTP server is that you need an FTP client to connect to it, whereas web servers can be accessed using a plain old web browser. However, many modern web browsers support the FTP protocol. Instead of prefacing the URL with http: //, use ftp: //. That said, most web browsers make crappy FTP clients. You should use a more fully- featured FTP client to conect to your server like Smart. FTP or WS. It's been around for years . The newest version adds more security through SSL support and the best part of all is that the personal version which allows for two FTP logins is completely free. Now, don't get confused because they have several levels of pricing and several editions, but you can download a single package from here that includes all versions. Once installed, you will have a . And by all means, if you decide to use this on a machine at work, make your employer pay for a license, but as long as this is on your home computer, free personal use is fine. Step 2: Complete setup and create a user login. After the initial setup is done, Serv- U should start the administrator and ask you to create a new user account. Start off by first putting in the domain name you used to setup your dynamic DNS. The names I'm using in these figures are for demonstration purposes. This will give you easy access to any file on the main drive. Be sure you say No to locking your own user in the home directory, otherwise you might not be allowed to switch to other drives. Step 3: Grant proper rights to any drives you have. When you are done creating a new user account, start the FTP server and the Serv- U Administrator application. Expand the Domains tree to show your server, then the Users tree to find your account. With your user selected, click the Dir Access tab on the right pane, as shown. This will give you total access to upload, download, delete, create, and make any directory changes as well. If you're nervous about your account having too much access, you can probably get away with just read or read and write access for most things. Also be sure to add any other drives on your computer (I have a second hard drive with the letter E: \ on mine, as shown in the figure). Step 4: Be sure you have outside access to your new FTP server. Like many of you reading this, I have a router/firewall/wireless access point at home that shares my broadband connection with every internet device in the house. Most router/firewall/wireless points hand out internal IP addresses and keep your computers safely away from outside access, but if you're running your own FTP or web server at home, you'll want to poke a hole in the firewall and map port 2. Serv- U. Here's a screenshot of my D- Link wireless router's advanced settings page where I'm mapping port 2. IP address. For regular FTP connections, map port 2. FTP connections, map port 9. Step 5: Test it out. The last thing to do is to test out your FTP server by firing up a FTP client and try connecting to your own server. Even though you are using the very computer you are testing, if you try to FTP using the outside address (your dynamic DNS name), it will be exactly like connecting from the outside. Here's a partial screenshot of me using WS. On the right pane, I'm connected to my own FTP server (I called it . If you share a large corporate network or ever want to access your home server from an open wireless access point, by all means set Serv- U to allow secure (SSL) connections. This will encrypt your password and any files that are transmitted, keeping prying eyes from knowing how to access your home server or what you did during your connections. It's pretty easy to do in Serv- U. Bring up your Serv- U Administrator application, click your home server's domain name under the Domains area. On the right pane, there is a setting marked Security and change the pull- down to Allow SSL/TLS and regular sessions (see below) or for even more security set it to Allow only SSL/TLS sessions. Then hit Apply to save this setting. When you connect to it the first time, you might get a warning about a bogus certificate provided by Serv- U. Just set your FTP program to always trust it and you won't see this warning again. That's it. Now you'll never forget a file at home because anything on your home computer will be accessible from anywhere else on earth. Matt Haughey, web developer and designer, founded popular community weblog Meta. Filter, publishes news on all things personal video recorder at PVR Blog and posts daily photographs at Ten Years of My Life. Here I'll discuss four of the options you have for accessing FTP sites in a Java program. You may be able to do something like this. URL(. Based on the code comments (. For example. it only supports binary file transfersit doesn't support passive modeit doesn't parse directory listings (the format of which can vary greatly from server to server). Because of this, the class is probably a better programming reference than anything else. It's a good example of what's involved in the background when you access an FTP site and try to perform operations, but the lack of features described above may be a deterrant. The biggest problem can end up being that passive mode isn't supported, since that is often a requirement in corporate firewall situations. Despite the fact that this class is officially undocumented and unsupported, it appears to be widely used. At the time of this writing, there are some seemingly unofficial Java. Docs for the Sun Ftp. Client class: Sun. Ftp. Wrapper. javaa program that uses the wrapper: Ftp. Wrapper. Test. java. In many cases, this will be sufficient for your use. Here are some of the downsides. Ftp. Client class is unsupported by Sun (even though it works, they could modify or remove it at will in later versions)it doesn't support an automatic way to parse directory listings, which makes it quite difficult to list the files and subdirectories on a server. While the . If you compile and run the Ftp. Wrapper. Test file above, you'll see that the results of the LIST command are pretty confusing. Not only is each file/directory name embedded in a hard- to- parse string containing permission flags, file size, and last modified date, but the format of the file information string can differ from server to server. The format of the results of a LIST command on a Unix FTP server versus a Windows FTP server are completely different. The format can even vary between different FTP server implementations on the same operating system. The library is pretty well tested, and is also open- source and free to use (as long as you abide by the terms of the Apache license). This library is actually the old ORO Net. Smartphone - Mobile Computing Device Comparison. Although smartphones have largely taken over the handheld computing space, PDAs are not entirely extinct. Many people still use PDAs for personal and work uses. Given this, you may be wondering what the difference is between a PDA and a smartphone, and why some users prefer one over the other. Simply put, a smartphone is a converged device that combines the functionalities of a PDA and a cell phone. However, there are additional factors to consider as you decide which device is best for your needs. Read on to learn more about the pros and cons of each. Save Money with a PDAPDAs are often cheaper than a smartphone over the life of the device. Although the initial purchase price of some smartphones is less than the cost of a PDA, due to wireless carrier subsidies, you. This extra monthly fee adds up over time, making smartphones more expensive in the long run. As an example, consider a PDA that costs $3. After just one year of service, you will have spent a total of $5. Connectivity. As mentioned, smartphones connect to a cellular network, just like a cell phone. With a wireless data plan, smartphones can surf the Internet from anywhere a cellular signal is available (though speeds vary). PDAs do not connect to cellular networks and are thus unable to provide the same range of connectivity to the Internet. PDAs and smartphones also use other forms of connectivity, including Wi- Fi and Bluetooth. With a Wi- Fi enabled PDA or smartphone, for instance, you can surf the Internet, check email, and download files wherever a Wi- Fi hotspot is available, often at much higher speeds than with cellular data networks. If your device has Wi- Fi, you can also use Internet calling plans, such as Skype, to connect to friends and family. PDAs are Carrier Independent. Smartphones are often tied to a wireless carrier. Should you wish to switch from AT& T to Verizon Wireless, for example, the smartphone you used with AT& T is unlikely to work on Verizon Wireless. With a PDA, changing wireless providers is not an issue. Converged Devices Often Require Sacrifices. While it.
